International Day of Charity: 5 September

Charity is such an integral part of our society; giving to charity not only supports those in need, but it also makes us feel good and allows us to help enable positive changes in the world.

In celebration of International Day of Charity, we are taking a look at two particular charities that we work closely with at Campus Vets and Pets: Cats Protection and Dogs Trust.

Cats Protection

As many of you will know, we are delighted that Cats Protection have chosen to use the facilities at Campus Vets and Pets to help some of the many cats in need. Although the cats on site are not currently available for homing, important work goes on here as the centre is used as an admissions and assessment facility. On arrival, the cats are assessed by a vet, flea treated, microchipped and neutered (where necessary) and given any medical treatments that may be needed. Once the cats are ready to find their new home they are transported to nearby Gildersome Homing centre.

Cats Protection do amazing work, not only do they take in and rehome cats to loving homes, they help in numerous other ways such as:

  • Providing financial assistance: To those on low incomes looking to get their cat neutered
  • Paws Protect Cat fostering service: Helping find foster homes for cats for families fleeing domestic abuse until they have a safe place to live and can be reunited with their cat
  • Speaking up for Cats: Working with, and influencing, politicians and decision makers to create a better world for cats
  • National information line: Helping answer questions on cat care, stray cats, rehoming cats and becoming a volunteer
  • Grief support: Proving resources and a sympathetic ear through a confidential phone line for those faced with the loss of their beloved cat

How can you help?

There are many ways in which you can help Cats Protection, such as giving a regular gift via Direct Debit or leaving a gift in your will, subscribing to The Cat Magazine, or giving up some of your time to volunteer. You can find out more on the Cats Protection website.

Dogs Trust

Dogs Trust are most commonly known for their fantastic work taking in unwanted or abandoned dogs and trying to find them permanent, loving homes. However, after realising that one of the biggest reasons for dogs being giving up for rehoming in the UK was their behaviour, in 2017 Dogs Trust set out to address the root cause of these problems through the creation of Dogs Trust Dog School. Dogs Trust Dog School is a nationwide network of trainers providing fun and educational courses for dog owners to help them build the foundations needed to develop a strong bond, cope with everyday life and avoid the pitfalls that can lead to behavioural problems.

Classes run by Dogs Trust Dog School at Campus Vets and Pets are on Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings. Full details can be found on the Dogs Trust Dog School website.

How can you help?

There are a lot of different ways that you can help support Dogs Trust with their work; from becoming a member, carrying out at fundraising activity, volunteering your time at a rescue centre or looking into how your company can help support the work of this charity. Find out more on the Dogs Trust website.
